Corinth Teams Sweep 4A, Biancamano Dominates 5A Girls Race

It was a team effort for Corinth High cross country program on Monday at the Mississippi State Cross Country State Championships. Both the boys and girls swept the 4A team titles at the Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss.

The boys won their third straight title as all five runners placed in the top 20, led by junior Joel Parker’s seventh place finish (18:02.47). 

“This has been a core group the past three or four years,”Corinth coach Andy McElyetold the Daily Journal after the race. “The program continues to build and get better.”

For the girls, Corinth had all seven runners finish in the top 26 to score 79 points and hold off Pass Christian (83 points).

In the 4A individual races, it was all Mooreville. Senior Dylan Allen won the boys title (16:50.67) and senior Mycah Sanders (21:03.34) claimed the girls. 

In 6A, Ocean Springs senior junior Alexander Whyte crossed the line first (16:48.57) to lead his team to a narrow 36-45 team win over defending champion Pearl. 

The 6A girls was even tighter as the Pearl girls scored 66 points, edging out Hernando (67 points). Hernando’s Katelyn Cartwright defended her individual in 19:23.15. 

St. Patrick swept the 2A boys and girls titles. The St. Patrick boys defended their title with 42 points, placing four runners in the top 10. The St. Patrick girls had three runners in the top 10 to score 51 points. 

Ingomar junior Thomas Floyd won the boys title in 18:07.98, while freshman Aubrey Britt of Loyd Star crossed the line in first in 20:00.58.

5A/3A/1A- Saturday, Nov. 3

A year ago, the Brookhaven boys edged out Saltillo 39-43. On Saturday, it was roles reversed as Saltillo scored 41 points to beat Brookhaven (42) for the 5A state crown. Saltillo went 6-7-8-9 and nabbed the 11th, 13th and 14th spot. Junior Mason Watkins of Picayune Memorial won the race in 16:46.7. 

In the girls race, Saltillo claimed the team title with 32 points as all seven runners finished the in the top 12. Long Beach freshman Brooklyn Biancamano won in 18:10.7. 

In 3A, Kossuth swept the boys and girls team titles. The boys breezed to a title with 31 points, placing five runners in the top 12. St. Andrews Episcopal senior Luis Flores won the 3A individual race in 18:09.5. 

The Kossuth girls edged out St. Andrews Episcopal, 46-48, placing three runners in the top 5. Choctaw Central sophomore Sierra Wallace won in 20:51.8.

Tupelo Christian Prep claimed both the boys and girls team 1A titles easily and also won the individual races. Junior Brock Kelly helped his team defend their title as he won the boys race in 16:33.5. Junior Allison Hanby won the girls race in 21:14.3.
